I had the same issue on my old bike. I am guessing that maybe your gear cable tension is too tight when shifted to the 50 tooth ring. So when the really tight cable is 'let go' by the shifter, it pings violently.

If you have barrel adjusters, try reducing the tension a little bit. And quite brilliantly you drew a live aid guitar this morning on Strava! Navigation was the one thing I wanted from the Garmin. I couldn't see the point of the 510 at all. Does nothing that a combo of my Cateye £40 computer and Strava on my mobile were doing happily for me.

Battery on my phone isn't great so don't really want to use it for Strava/Garmin. I'm happy with the 510 though, easy to see while riding, can be operated wearing gloves. Haven't really played with the 'navigation' side of it but if you have a rough idea of the roads you're going on there shouldn't be any reason you'd get lost. Biggest issue with this weekend's ride was how shitty people were behaving in cars. You had the twats who honked at us, the idiots who didn't give us any room (and I mean ANY room) and the morons who just sped past us at the signposted speed.

It's been OK in previous weeks but I blew my top at one woman who honked at us, so much so that when she reached the junction ahead of us she was desperately trying to find first gear, crunching the gearbox in the process. I was riding back to banstead from Streathem on friday night, coming up to a traffic light controled junction, lights were red, I signal to go into the right turn lane, check over my shoulder, car 30 yards or so back from me, i start to pull over to the right, at which point this bell end decides he absolutely MUST beat me to these red traffic lights, so he floors it, swerves round me, and has to slam his brakes on to stop in time.

So I stop next to him (actually leaning on his car rather than unclipping) and shout blue murder at him, at which point he realises the lights have changed and floors it, with me still leaning on his car, held onto it for a few seconds, then thought better of it and let go. If all you're interested in is your own data, then Garmin Connect is great. Rumour also has it that the new version which is imminent will have segments too and will be a bit more social.

It's obviously never going to rival Strava for shere number of users though, as it obviously has a pre-requisite that you own a Garmin device! Personally I'm not that bothered about KOMs etc, so if I have a few of you guys as friends on Garmin and they introduce segments so I can track my own performance on them, I might stop worrying so much about keeping Strava instantly up to date. It all centres around segments.

People effectively nominate sections of road(s) and give it a name. It might be a climb, a descent or anything you like really. Anyone who has ridden that section on a ride they upload to Strava, automatically gets added to the leaderboard and the guy at the top gets the KOM (or girl QOM). You can then view your own efforts over time on those segments, comparing against your own previous times, your friends, or everyone.

I'd be tempted to put things like calories and max speed on a 2nd page as you're not really going to be too bothered about tracking them as often. One thing I find useful, especially if its a profile you use when using the navigation features, is to have a field telling you the distance to the next turn. It sometimes doesn't give you that much warning, so its good to have an idea of when something is due to happen. Is it the sort of thing you could get repaired by a specialist (excuse the pun) My new bike has a very minor defect on the top tube that they called me about before delivery. They threw in £100 of goodies to compensate. I couldn't see it on any of the pictures they sent me and I've only managed to see it in the flesh once in very bright sunlight.
